Okay, I’m not gonna lie here to you guys about this comic book. I freaking love it alright? I seriously, honestly love it. I wish I had read it a whole lot sooner then what I did as this is pretty freaking amazing and I’ve only read the first two issues! Hell, I should have realized just how awesome this would be when I was sent a giant poster awhile back that looked freaking awesome. But now I know and I’m happy about it. Mark London has done a fantastic job with the story here and don’t even really bother to focus on origins all that much. Sure that means we know very little of the core crew of Battlecats here but as you read it you come to learn just what kind of Cat folk they are through their dialogue and actions.
You’ve got Kelthan, the fearless leader, Mekkar, the easy going fella, Kaleera, the green eyed archeress who isn’t afraid to mix it up with Cats bigger then her, you’ve got Zorien, the quiet brown furred giant who probably has quite a few stories he could tell folks, and finally we have Vaela, who is essentially the group’s magic user.
Each brings something unique to the group and all are willing to fight to their last breath. Especially for their king. Who has sent them out to the location of La Marque to end the evil Dire Beast. A beast who has most likely given nightmares to a whole lot of Catfolk! Andy King and Alejandro Giraldo do a fantastic job together on these characters and as well as the scenery with their art and colors. And I honestly have to wonder why this isn’t an animated film!? I would buy it as quick as I could as it’d be great to witness the Battlecats in action on the screen. Especially if Andy and Alejandro’s work is brought into it all. I honestly think one should be listening to Amon Amarth while reading this comic! Even though we don’t know a lot of the history of Valderia, the few bits we do have is stuff that makes me want to learn of even more when it comes to the world Mark has brought us. And hopefully as time goes on with this title, we get to see more of Valderia and get to know more of its history.
Eltoreq, who has a lot of similarities to Zorien is kind of like a mini-boss that we get to see at the end of issue one and then also in issue 2. And he’s certainly no pushover despite Kaleera’s best efforts! Though my complaint is that he looks too similar to Zorien despite his red eyes and different looking armor. I can only assume that their region of Il-Shavaar all have similar looking Catfolk like them and I wonder if that ever gets confusing. And after Kaleera’s encounter with Eltoreq, I can only imagine how much she’s looking forward to a re-match with her as the victor! That is if Kelthan doesn’t make good on his promise first though! With folks like Eltoreq and his minions, along with treacherous walks, an armored goat of all things, ugly horn looking people, and what looks like a river dragon, the Battlecats have their work cut out for them! Hopefully they won’t be too exhausted when the time comes to finally take on the Dire Beast! Who if my thinking is correct about a certain panel we see of one creature, he looks mighty nasty!
Which is perfect for inducing nightmares into the general populace! Cause if you’re all cute looking, you’re gonna have a harder time of instilling fear into people. I can’t wait to see what happens next in the Battlecats world! And if you haven’t yet, I highly recommend you all check out this fantastic title for yourselves as I honestly feel you won’t be disappointed!
