While I am vaguely familiar with the game this title (released back in 2021) takes inspiration from and is something of a continuation of, I went into this not knowing what to expect and came out of it having really enjoyed the story. Though I am unsure if how certain characters act in this book are how the game portrayed them or if its Ben Kahn’s take but either way, I enjoyed their take. But boy does Zeus need to do some growing up as he acts like such an over grown child and its sad but more or less in line with how he’s been described in various myths. Along with modern day takes on said various myths. Of course, the same could be said for Fenyx’s mother, Thetis. But in her case, it probably helps to stay as far away from Zeus as possible given how he can easily bring out the worst in her. At least with Fenyx however, its understandable why she’s so excitable and eager to do this and that after becoming a Goddess given how young she is.
Its amusing and charming, even if those around her might not see it that way given how much older they are then her! I wish I had read this much sooner than what I did but hey, better late than never, right?
And given the cancellation of the sequel of the video game, I’m curious if Ubisoft/Dark Horse/Ben Kahn will just continue their take on things in comic book/graphic novel/novel form. It would definitely allow for more opportunity to explore potential and especially Fenyx’s potential as she deals with various situations in every day life. Whether that be average situations or not so average situations given this is the world of Greek Mythology and a simple earthquake can be so much more than that because of it. And if Georgeo Brooks, Wes Dzioba, Richard Starkings, and Jimmy Betancourt are along for the ride in whatever way, I am definitely down for it!
