The Super Hero genre is a big thing, its the bread and butter of DC and Marvel and even certainly has its presence in the Indies as well. You’ve got the likes of the X-Men, Avengers, Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Savage Dragon, The Boys, Justice League, Irredeemable, and so many others to the point I’m not exactly the biggest fan of the genre these days and would rather read any other genre. But then comes along Anthony ‘Tony Nacho’ Iannaccio and Joey Murphy with Superguy. Something I’d seen Tony promoting for months on Twitter (never X, never ever) in between being a loving family man, being one of three hosts of the Comics N’ Chronic Podcast, and perhaps being the biggest supporter of InStockTrades that I know of and was introduced too thanks to him.
With all that leading to Tony launching a Kickstarter for SG’s first issue and quite successfully getting it to fund within 4 hours of launching!
Support, Hell of a thing.
Now, you might be wondering if I’m not the biggest fan of the SH genre, why am I writing this review for a Super Hero book? Well, primarily just my wanting to support a fellow voice in the promotion of (Indie) comics. That, and admittedly… A little curiousity on my part given this is Tony’s first foray crossing over into the creation side of things. And so, after taking a little time to finally (as opposed to weeks to months to a year as I’ve unfortunately done before) read both the Ashcan and the official first issue and came away from the whole thing with a smile on my face and geniunely wanting more. If only to see what Tony and Joey have in mind for us readers like serious consequences for Superguy.
Who… Ultimately… Really isn’t the kind of Hero you want saving your cat from a tree due to a bad combo of Laziness and Narcissism. Robotguy on the other hand… Is perhaps the one you want doing so despite a rather murky introduction to the guy.
Despite the intentions Tony and Joey have in mind for SG (Comedy for the win), I am curious if the two will explore what led to SG being the way he is and RG’s own past as well for that matter. Something we see a little hint of around the end of the first issue. T and J’s goal is to make one laugh while reading this book due to feeling comedy is lacking in comics these days and its a goal I can get behind. Sure, the guys can explore (the serious ones anyways) the consequences SG could’ve faced where the President’s daughter is concerned but that would take away from what T and J are doing here. A fun comedic time for anyone to enjoy unless they’re a downright party pooper.
Superguy isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel or be the next biggest thing since Sliced Bread came into our lives. No, its just something that’s here to tickle our funny bones and just be enjoyable in general. And that is something I can get behind as I love doses of Fun and Silly as too much Super Serious is a bad thing. Will SG and RG make up after the way things went down between the two? Will RG be able to explain himself to his sister without going boom? Will the President’s plan work out for the best? Who knows! But its all bound to be amusing as can be in getting to read whenever the time comes!
So with that said, Superguy currently has 9 days left to go in its Kickstarter run and if you’re looking for something a little (Humorously silly) different in your Super Comics, SG may be for you!
