So Easter and the Bunny Rabbit have hippity hoppity’ed our way once again for those who celebrate that sort of thing, and since one of the main things about ol’ Easter is about a big ol’ humanoid like Bunny Rabbit, it hit me to do this idea. Namely, a wee little list about Anthropomorphism in Comics. And as we all know (unless you’ve been under a rock all this time), anthropomorphisim has been around for decades in various forms of media from cartoons to comic books and we’ve gotten the likes of Donald Duck and his Nephews, Goof Troop, Mickey Mouse, the Carebears, a certain purple Dinosaur, and many others.
Now I’m not gonna touch on those characters or other obvious characters that have comic books like Sonic, Darkwing Duck, Donald Duck, and the Ninja Turtles. Nah, instead, I’m gonna touch more on the lesser known Anthro Comics…
Homebrewed Comics’ Bigfoot Knows Karate – Join Bigfoot in a heart-pounding martial arts adventure against KUNG FU ‘THULHU,’ where every fight is a battle for survival.
Self-Published/Scout Comics’ Metalshark Bro – A classic shark meets demon, demon transforms shark into a sharkman, shark vows vengeance on demon story. Oh yea…HEAVY METAL forever!
Jim Benton’s Clyde – When Clyde the bear decides to ditch his safe and peaceful life in Cubville and head off for the mean streets of Grizzly City, he learns, with the help of a reformed juvenile delinquent butterfly, the Bad Life isn’t always so great, and there’s something to be said for helping your friends and family even though that really does kind of stink a little.
Tom Caffrey’s Armoured Science Kung-Fu Cats – Follow the journey of five cats. Who are suddenly bestowed with the universe’s most powerful technology and figure out how to be the protectors of Earth.
Image Comics’ Spy Seal – Part One Journey into the thrilling world of international espionage as one of Britain’s most covert MI-6 divisions, The Nest, recruits a brand-new secret agent to their team: SPY SEAL!
Candy Briones’ Taco El Gato – Meet Taco Fluffy, one cool, cool cat in a dog-eat-dog world.
Avery Hill Publishing’s Buttertubs (tho I’m not entirely sure this would count) – Buttertubs is a dog who always wants to save the dudes and damsels in distress, but who always mucks it up on account of his inability to stop sweating butter. Running becomes flailing and crashing, everything he touches becomes greasy and strangely flammable, and even simple tasks become fraught with slippery danger. His nemesis, The Hotdog Queen, needs to watch her back, his friend Hester is always trying to stop his foolish escapades, and there are many, many damsels in distress. All in a day’s work for Buttertubs!
Mad Cave Studios’ The Mushroom Knight – An adolescent girl searches the deep dark woods for her missing dog, entangling her destiny with a chivalrous mushroom faerie on a mystical quest to protect the biome from catastrophic ruin.
Mad Cave Studios’ Battlecats – While on a quest from King Eramad III to slay the Dire Beast, the Battlecats are faced with familiar foes, and hard truths as the foundation for an uprising in Valderia brews.
Mad Cave Studios’ Deer Editor – Deer Editor is about the editor of the crime beat, who is also a deer. He’s a great journalist who stumbles onto a terrible and unseen conspiracy in his town.
Penny-Farthing Productions/Marlaine Maddux White’s Hidden Loch – There is a separate world secluded deep beneath Scotland’s infamous Loch Ness. It is called THE HIDDEN LOCH and it has existed for thousands of years as a serene community of extinct and mythological creatures totally unknown to the human world above. In order to find the answer of how to protect this ancient ancestral realm from encroaching humans (Drywalkers), Nessandra, a young plesiosaur, is forced to depart the safety of her secret underwater paradise to embark upon a journey of tantalizing discovery.
She and her three brave companions, is destined to learn that the vast ocean depths lying before them are a far more dangerous and awe-inspiring place than they could have ever imagined. Their adventures transform their understanding of the world at large especially as it has evolved in ways which are a stark contrast to what they had always known to be true while growing up in The Hidden Loch. It is a time of great crisis even impending doom for The Hidden Loch, and the outcome of Nessandra s critical mission may well determine the ultimate fate of the unique and beautiful world she calls home!
Well folks, while I’m sure there are tons more out there featuring Anthropomorphic Comics, these are the ones I’m fairly familiar with. Ones you’ve likely seen us cover in the past in our 12 (13?) years of helping spread the word of the Indies. And if you know of others, feel free to share in the comments section below!
Now… The question is… Whatcha gonna do when AnthroPoMania is runnin’ wild on you, brother!?
